Why We Translate - A Series
Recent articles in our newsletters have explored different ways people have understood deafness: the moral, medical, and now the social model. The social model rightly points out that being Deaf is not itself disabling; rather, it is society’s barriers, unaccommodating attitudes, structures, and environments that create the challenges. This perspective has brought gains in technology, education, and policy. Yet too often, Deaf people were left out of those conversations, resulting in “solutions” that did not reflect their true needs
The Bible reminds us that the real source of goodness is not our environment, but God Himself: “No one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). True change happens when we turn to Him and allow Him to work in us: “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13).
The Bible is filled with stories that reveal who God is and display His goodness. Deaf people often come to Him as they encounter and understand His goodness through their natural sign languages. After that life changing moment, they are transformed into witnesses and servants of the Lord.
